Introducing… REC Room Roundtables: A Discussion Group for Teens
November 7, 2023

Sometimes there just isn’t enough time to talk about what is relevant to teen life when we’re teaching in schools: conversations are cut off at the bell, there is a sense that there is always more to cover, other tangents to take, new perspectives to explore. From this realization, the REC Peer Education Team brainstormed ways to make those tangents into main topics. And so, REC Room Roundtables – AKA R3 – were born! Our Peer Education Coordinator, T, and the teen Peer Educators have been working tirelessly to develop, plan, and coordinate this new educational series for Homer Youth, and we are excited to unveil it to the community.
The REC Peer Education Team will be offering monthly, afterschool discussion-based group events for teens on topics such as: media literacy, online safety, relationships and healthy communication, bullying, mental health, or other generated topics from our groups. Roundtables are designed to elicit critical thinking skills through guided discussions, but with the flexibility to work with whatever each participant brings to the table. There will also be discussion questions that each teen can take with them home to keep the conversation going with parents and family. We will always offer the same discussion for different age groups – one event for High Schoolers (9th-12th grade) and for Middle Schoolers (6th-8th grade).
Our first Roundtable will center around Media Literacy, and will take place upstairs at the REC Room on Wednesday, November 29th, from 4-6pm. This event will be open to High School-aged teens. Parent Permission is required, so click here:

This same Roundtable will be available for Middle School-aged teens at Homer Public Library on December 12th, 4-6pm.
